The Life Centre - Early School Leavers Project

The Life Centre is a pilot project for Early School Leavers set up by the Christian Brothers with assistance from The Holy Faith Sisters.

The Centre caters for boys and girls between the ages of twelve and sixteen who have not made the transfer from primary to post primary who have dropped out, who have been expelled, or who cannot cope with the mainstream school system.

They are referred by schools, parents, social workers, school attendance service, juvenile liaison officers and others.

The Centre caters for a maximum of ten young people at a time and has a full-time staff of three, assisted by part-time teachers and volunteers.

The Life Centre for operates during normal school hours and for the duration of the school year.

The programme followed includes:

English
Mathematics
Home Economics

Business Studies
Art
Craft and Woodwork

History
Self Awareness
Spirituality
Physical Education
Outings

Where possible, young people are prepared for state examinations.

When young people have completed their stay at the end of The Life Centre, they are helped to find employment, to return to mainstream education or to move on to a project such as Youthreach.

The Centre works closely with parents, social workers, schools, and other young agencies involved in the lives of the young people.

The Life Centre is a response to the issue of early school leaving which attempts to work in a holistic way with young people, respecting their dignity and building up their self-esteem.
