Edmund Rice Camps

Our aim is

to offer children:

  • a week of fun-filled activities in a safe and friendly environment

  • the chance to grow in self-esteem and confidence

and to offer young adult leaders:

  • An experience of working together for the good of children

  • An opportunity to develop confidence and skill as a leader

  • A chance to explore their spirituality and increase their awareness of social justice

What exactly is an Edmund Rice Camp?

A non-residential week-long summer camp for kids.

Organised and coordinated by young adult leaders (17-21 years old)

1-1 ratio of leaders to children.

Camps currently held in Cork, Dublin, Omagh, Waterford, Liverpool, Stoke.

More camps planned for the future.

Feedback from leaders...

"Camp is a life-changing experience... unforgettable and very satisfying"

Sarah, Waterford

"Camp rocks... because you make new friends and you make a difference to people's lives"

Niall, Omagh

Where did it all begin?

In 1979, the first camp was held in Parade College, a Christian Brothers school in Bundoora, Melbourne, Australia, to provide a summer activities programme for children. The camp was a huge success and gradually the movement spread to other schools and colleges throughout Australia. Edmund Rice Camps have now been held in South Africa, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and New Zealand and the UK.

In 1998, the first camp in Ireland was run by the Presentation Brothers and their Associates in Cork, followed in 1999 by a Dublin Camp run by the Christian Brothers, Associates and friends. Camps now run in Omagh, Waterford, Liverpool and Stoke and there are plans to open further camps in 2006.

The Camp offers the leaders an opportunity to be a good role model, to help disadvantaged children, and to develop their organisational skills. In a collaborative venture, they also develop communication, leadership and teamwork skills.
