The Response
For the past
two hundred years men and women have been inspired by the story of
Edmund Rice and by his vision and made a response appropriate to
their times.
In present
days the response is expanding to include new projects and
activities.
Some of the
responses being made are summarised below. Further information is
available by using the links above.
The
Edmund Rice Awards
The
Edmund Rice Awards encourage young people to respond to needs in
their local community in the spirit of Edmund Rice. More than 60
schools now participate. Through the Awards students experience the
realities of social injustice and exclusion. By their actions and
reflection they make a significant difference in the lives of others
in their local community. The students themselves are influenced by
their experience, thus enabling them to understand more deeply the
connection between life and Christian values.
The
Edmund Rice Camps
 |
The
Edmund Rice Camps provide recreational opportunities for
disadvantaged children, aged 8 – 12, and offer them an experience of
fun, friendship and sharing in a safe and friendly environment,
helping them grow in self-confidence and self-esteem. |
|
The children engage in a variety of activities such as
sports, arts and crafts, drama, swimming, athletics, team
games and concerts, The Camp Leaders (young adult
volunteers) also fully participate in activities and reflect
upon the social justice dimension. Currently there are Camps
in Dublin, Waterford and Omagh, with plans for
further expansion. |
Developing World Immersion Programme
The
Developing World Immersion Programme was established in 1999 and is
now managed by the Edmund Rice Centre. The Immersion Programme
focuses on providing students and teachers with an opportunity to
visit a developing world setting in a spirit of “being with people”
as fellow children of God and in so doing to become aware of the
issues associated with poverty and justice in the Developing World.
The experiences shared by students and teachers are conducted in a
reflective manner and provide an opportunity for all involved to
follow in the footsteps of Edmund Rice. To date, 34 schools have
taken part in the Programme
Edmund Rice Voluntary Service Programme
The
Edmund Rice Voluntary Service Programme enables volunteers in the 18
- 25 age range, to engage with those in need in society through
service placements. The Programme encourages the involvement of
young adults in a process of action and reflection on the experience
of involvement with the poor and socially marginalised and supports
them in their participation. Placements will be available,
initially, within local social service projects but it is planned
that opportunities will also exist for placements in the developing
world.
Edmund Rice Network Communications
A
number of publications and promotional materials are produced by the
Centre to meet specific needs within the Network. These are
available from the Centre and on its website. The Centre’s main
channels of communication across the Network are: the Network News
newsletter, and website: www.er-in.com
